The Power of Buzzwords
Buzzwords are a form of mental prompts that empower you to look to yourself for answers and propel you to action in a positive and proactive way. This month of February, I share a buzzword from my book’s Life section. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the state of the world and the many challenges we face each day. Finding balance means not only acknowledging the reality around us but also searching for the strength and conviction to keep moving forward in a constructive way. Recently I found inspiration while listening to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s speech at the World Economics Forum. He said, “We actively take on the world as it is, not wait around for a world we wish to be.” His words resonated with me, and inspired my choice for this month’s buzzword, “Perfectly Unperfect.” It might seem lighthearted, especially given the gravity of current global events. However, its message is a powerful one for it reminds us to accept life’s imperfections and strengthen our resolve and work towards a better future, even if it isn’t perfect.
This month’s buzzword is:
Perfectly Unperfect
OK, I admit that I am a perfectionist. I love working hard to pull everything together, place it gingerly in a little box, and adorn it with a beautiful bow. But as we know, life does not work that way, and as much as I might try to put something or someone into “my little box,” it is not always easy or pretty. Hence, when I thought of this buzzword, I ran to my computer, typed it in, and prayed for that red line indicating that the words “perfectly unperfect” were not grammatically correct. When this indeed happened, I screamed “YES!” and triumphantly fist pumped into the air. What makes this buzzword perfect is the contradiction of the words—something being perfectly unperfect. This buzzword is great to use when we need to recognize that perfection is not always attainable. So, when you’ve done the best you can but you’re still not satisfied, look to “Perfectly Unperfect” as a buzzword to help you step out of the situation, accept that not everything can be perfect, and find peace with it.
