The Power of Buzzwords
Buzzwords are a form of mental prompts that empower you to look to yourself for answers and propel you to action in a positive and proactive way. This June, I bring you a buzzword from my book’s Children’s section. Communication plays a vital role in personal growth and how we interact with others. With busy schedules and constant social media distractions, it is important to make time for unplugged, uninterrupted connection. Meaningful conversations do not happen in passing; they require quality time to breath, reflect, and share, especially when dealing with matters of the heart. Although this buzzword is written with children in mind, its message is universal in building and strengthening relationships. “I Am Listening” is a simple yet powerful buzzword reminding you to be fully present with the person you are with.
This month’s buzzword is:
I Am Listening
One of my greatest indulgences is when I spend time with someone who is truly listening to me. It gives me a sense of worth that I am valued and that someone wants to hear what I have to share. The art of listening is a gift, one that is hard to find in the age of distractions, interruptions, and racing from one thing to another, but when it does happen, it is magical. I believe some children stop talking to their parents because they are no longer heard. In my observations, some parents spend that precious time with their children teaching and preaching but often forget about the vital listening part. “I Am Listening” is a powerful buzzword, for it can bring intimacy, respect, trust, and understanding. It is a time when you completely rid your mind of any distractions and concentrate on what your child is saying. If you are truly there, they will know it, feel it, and trust it, and they will be empowered by it. Listening creates a win-win scenario, as it gives your child the confidence to share, which strengthens them as individuals and, in doing so, strengthens your relationship.
